Lichfield Academy beat Burton Albion

First round of the midland floodlit cup brought cup favourites Burton Albion to the academy. With minutes to kick off Lichfield were forced into using an outfield player in goal for the third time this season. Reece Winter take a bow -what a performance. Consistant great saves throughout the game and did not look out of place in goal. Skipper Ben ( enclosed) produced a leadership performance at the heart of the defence with great speed, energy and tackles.

A new formation brought a solid look to Lichfield and after only 7 minutes full back Alex Jones scored with a great goal in the box. A great reward for his fantastic present form. Jordan Gray & Jacob burns defendered like it was the cup final and looked sharp throughout organising and controlling the back line. TJ played for the team again and was rewarded with a brilliant penalty in the bottom bins of the net. 2-0 and Burton were shocked.

The opposition had their chances however, Lichfield lads showed great energy, commitment and on times put suitable pressure on the attack to keep a clean sheet at the break. Charlie cotterill who had been fouled for the penalty after a lovely passing move and classy run, had to be subsituted. Ethan providing sound comfort in the second half. Mo called into the starting team at the last minute showed fantastic energy and desire to organise others and work hard for the team. A great performance. Rainbow in midfield had his best performance of the season working hard for the team, nearly scoring again and showing good skill when required.

The strikers looked dangerous througout and though playing with injurys worked well together with Max scoring again with a great through ball showing class to hit the back of the net. Burton pulled one back however, Lichfield looked solid and dangerous on the break. Jordy Addy going close with a dancing run that brought a good save and Brandon showing great touches up front and gaining some invaluable minutes. The remaining subs all encoraged their team and their time will come to perform. Jordan notched the fourth and kept his goal scoring form going and looked electric at times with max a consistant threat. A floodlit game that brought Lichfield a solid performance with a fantastic team display of togetherness and spirit. What a win against competition favourities and a big big club in Burton. The opposition tried to play their football but this was Lichfield Academys night to shine. Well done team. 4-1 winners.
